Industrial & factory noise near your home

Machinery, plant and industrial noise are assessed against recognised standards — which gives you a solid, technical case.

Industrial noise — machinery, extraction, generators, reversing alarms — is often assessed using BS 4142, which compares the noise to the background level and rates how likely it is to cause complaints. That gives your case a technical backbone most neighbour disputes don't have.

What strengthens an industrial case

The pack's Expert Acoustic Annexe (in Professional) explains BS 4142, WHO guidance and BS 8233 in plain English so you know what your evidence is judged against. The free check is a good first step.

Taking it forward

Log everything with the Case Toolkit, push the council, and use Section 82 if they don't act.

Common questions

What is BS 4142 and does it apply to me?
BS 4142 is the standard method for rating industrial and commercial sound. If your problem is plant or machinery noise, it's likely how the council will assess it — and the pack explains it for you.
Do I need a professional acoustic survey?
Not necessarily to start. A strong diary plus the Expert Acoustic Annexe gets you a long way; a formal survey (£1,000-£2,000) is a step you can decide on later.
